WHY BLACK ACRE?

We named this company Black Acre Theatre after my grandfather’s farm in Jefferson, Iowa. My family used to spend every summer up on the farm, and all of my best memories of childhood come from that place. Black Acres was the place where I ran out into fields of corn so high, I wasn’t sure I could find my way out again. It was the place where I caught fireflies, wrote my first stories, and discovered my past. I made mischief at Black Acres. I learned. I snuck through tall grass and pretended I was an Indian Princess. Everything was possible.

When Ben and I first decided to make this theatre company happen, we spent a lot of time laboring over what to name it. I told him about Black Acres. Although he has never been to Iowa, he understood…

Black Acre has now taken on metaphorical status. It is the place for beginnings; a place to walk the line between child and adult. We hope this company will take on the spirit of its namesake, and that it will translate into our work.

Your contribution is appreciated, whether it is financial support, sharing ideas, or volunteering time. This process has been an adventure from the very beginning and we are so glad that you are joining us. See you at the theatre!

Thanks,

Mary and Ben
